Counselling or Coaching?

 It is common to feel unsure about whether counselling or coaching is the right kind of support for you.


Both offer space to reflect, understand yourself, and make sense of what is happening, but they serve different purposes and work in different ways.


This page is here to help you understand the difference, so you can make a choice that feels informed, steady, and right for where you are now.

Counselling offers a therapeutic space to explore emotional experiences, patterns, and difficulties in more depth.


It can help you make sense of what you are feeling, understand how past and present experiences may be affecting you, and process emotions in a safe, supported way.


Counselling may be a good fit if you want to:

  • explore overwhelming or distressing emotions
  • work through past experiences or trauma
  • understand anxiety, low mood, or relationship patterns
  • process grief, identity shifts, or significant life events
  • have ongoing therapeutic support for your emotional wellbeing


Counselling provides a contained, confidential space where emotional safety, trust, and therapeutic boundaries are central.

 Coaching is more forward-focused and structured.


My Rebuilding Your Way Coaching is designed for late-diagnosed neurodivergent adults and professionals who feel misaligned, burnt out, or unsure about what comes next.


Rather than focusing on emotional processing in the way counselling does, coaching supports you to:

  • rebuild self-trust after long-term masking
  • clarify what feels sustainable now
  • realign work and life with your capacity
  • redefine success in a way that reflects who you are
  • move forward with thoughtful, practical direction


Coaching is not clinical therapy or treatment for mental health conditions.


It is a reflective, collaborative process focused on clarity, alignment, and sustainable change.

Important Boundaries

To work safely and ethically, clear boundaries are important.


I do not work with the same person as both counsellor and coach at the same time. These are different types of support, and keeping them separate helps protect the focus, safety, and clarity of the work.


If you are receiving counselling with me, I would not also offer coaching, and vice versa.


If coaching feels appropriate but counselling may also be helpful, I can talk this through with you and suggest other therapists or services.


If, during coaching, it becomes clear that therapeutic support would be more appropriate, we would discuss this together continuing in a way that feels safe.

Still unsure?

It is completely normal to feel unsure about whether counselling or coaching is the right kind of support for you. You do not need to decide this alone.


If you are not sure what would be most helpful, we can talk it through together and think about what feels most appropriate for where you are now.


The most important thing is that the support feels clear, steady, and right for you.

Taking the first step

Choosing support is an important decision.


A first session offers a calm, contained space to explore what you need, without pressure or obligation.


It can be a chance to talk through what has brought you here, ask any questions, and get a feel for whether working together feels right.


If you decide not to continue, that choice will be fully respected.
